Unsung co-managers working with Europe's biggest stars

Tracking star managers in European equities, we found unheralded co-managers working alongside some of the best-known names in the sector. Working with the masters could make these managers the stars of this future - so who are they?

Robert Hofmann

Fund: Allianz RCM Europe Equity Growth

Lead manager: Thorsten Winkelmann

Hofmann joined Allianz Global full-time in 2005 and is responsible for generating new investment ideas and carrying out in-depth company analysis. In his role as part of Thorsten Winkelmann’s team, Hofmann supports the AA-rated Citywire manager on the European offering with a particular focus on Scandinavia. He previously worked closely with Dirk Enderlein, the former lead manager of the Europe Equity fund, between 2005 and September 2009.

Winkelmann currently manages three funds, all with a focus on Europe, and he has been managing money for nine years. He cemented his reputation in 2010 when he was named among the leading European equity managers for his performance at the helm of the European growth funds.

Katrina Dudley

Fund: Franklin Mutual European

Lead manager: Philippe Brugère-Trélat

Named as an assistant portfolio manager in August 2007, Dudley has a particular focus on global industrial companies, such as those in the transportation and manufacturing sectors. Dudley, who joined Franklin Mutual in 2002, developed this area of expertise in her previous role as investment analyst at Federated Investors.

Having first joined Franklin Mutual Funds for 10 years in 1984, Philippe-Brugere Trelat has a wealth of experience in European equities. Returning to the firm in 2004, Trelat served as a co-manager under David Winters before taking over lead management in May 2005.

William Stormont

Fund: Henderson HF Pan European Equity

Lead manager: Tim Stevenson

One of the closest colleagues to lead fund manager Tim Stevenson, William Stormont has been a member of the Henderson Pan European Equity fund in a support capacity since June 2007. Stormont has a background in European equities and spent seven years with ABN Amro in sell-side roles, including small-cap strategy and hedge fund sales.

With 25 years’ experience, Tim Stevenson is another stalwart of the European equities space. Named as director of European equities in 1991, Stevenson has been in charge of the Henderson HF Pan European Equity fund since it launched in November 2001.

Yohan Salleron

Fund: Mandarine Valeur I

Lead manager: Marc Renaud

Under the stewardship of highly regarded French value manager Marc Renaud, Yohan Salleron could be one to watch for the future despite a recent difficult period. Currently operating as a deputy fund manager, Salleron was taken on board by Renaud at the start of 2008, shortly after the launch of Mandarine’s flagship Valeur fund. Salleron is charged with assisting in both analysing companies and also in aiding portfolio management.

Previously serving as chief executive officer and senior portfolio manager at Caisse Centrale de Reescompte Actions, Marc Renaud has a history of managing large amounts of money. Establishing his own outfit Mandarine Gestion in 2008, Renaud has carved out a reputation as an influential, contrarian investor.

Zehrid Osmani

Fund: BGF European Fund

Lead manager: Nigel Bolton

Osmani left his role as head of research for European equities at SWIP in 2008 to take up a post with BlackRock. His mandate under Bolton focuses on ensuring efficient use of research resources within the team and assisting in the portfolio management of Pan European portfolios. Osmani was named as an active manager on the fund in July 2010.

In his role as managing director and head of the BlackRock European equity style diversified team, Nigel Bolton has responsibility for all European accounts. Bolton joined the firm in 2008 and has almost 20 years’ experience in the European equities space.
